Sense of smell[edit]
Alongside the Bloodhound and Basset Hound, the Beagle has one of the best developed senses of smell of any dog.[34] In the xxxxs, John Paul Scott and John Fuller began a 13-year study of canine behaviour. As part of this research, they tested the scenting abilities of various breeds by putting a mouse in a one-acre field and timing how long it took the dogs to find it. The Beagles found it in less than a minute, while Fox Terriers took 15 minutes and Scottish Terriers failed to find it at all. The Beagle has an even temper and gentle disposition. Described in several breed standards as "merry", they are amiable and typically neither aggressive nor timid, although this depends on the individual. They enjoy company, and although they may initially be standoffish with strangers, they are easily won over. They make poor guard dogs for this reason, although their tendency to bark or howl when confronted with the unfamiliar makes them good watch dogs.
Beagles are intelligent but, as a result of being bred for the long chase, are single-minded and determined, which can make them hard to train. They can be difficult to recall once they have picked up a scent, and are easily distracted by smells around them. They do not generally feature in obedience trials; while they are alert, respond well to food-reward training, and are eager to please, they are easily bored or distracted.
Beagles are excellent with children and this is one of the reasons they have become popular family pets, but they are pack animals, and can be prone to separation anxiety.[43] Not all Beagles will howl, but most will bark when confronted with strange situations, and some will bay (also referred to as "speaking", "giving tongue", or "opening") when they catch the scent of potential quarry.[44] They also generally get along well with other dogs. They are not too demanding with regard to exercise; their inbred stamina means they do not easily tire when exercised, but they also do not need to be worked to exhaustion before they will rest. (((Why should you buy from me? These are not puppy mill dogs and are cared for everyday by my kids as though they were children. We have both parents here for you to meet. What is most important in any dog is their temperament. The parents are very good with children and good watchdogs. They are not hyper and are very good companions. The fathers parents was used to hunt and the female in her background has a grand champion. Their is no jive here, as long as neglect is not involved, if you have any problems bring them back. This is going to be the second of three litters and that will be it. We have pictures of pups with their families from the first litter and they turned out terrific.
The good and bad about Beagles. The Good: These are pack dogs. They are extremely social and quickly become part of the family and get along well with other dogs. They are extremely good with children even when small kids torture them. If you jog or like long walks the Beagle was bred to run for miles and miles. If they get in shape with you they can run a marathon. They have short hair so shedding is minimized to a few times of the year.
The bad news: The Beagle is an excellent digger and for a medium size to smaller dog can really jump well. When your pup gets a little older make sure to exercise them! If you get your Beagle in shape they can run for miles and very very fast. They need to be exercised or they will be fat and do evil in your yard and house. If you are a couch potato please pick another breed. If you have hyperactive kids perfect! Also, if you leave any food around they will find it, and will figure out how to get it. Remember why Beagles are in airports! They have the second best nose of all dog breeds and you will soon see why.
